10 Eco-friendly ideas for kids party bags

We all know that kids’ parties can be responsible for lots of waste - and the party bags are often the prime offender. Parents everywhere feel guilty as they stuff the plastic bags with more plastic rubbish (which will quickly end up in the bin) but we are compelled to do it. After all, what kind of party doesn’t have party bags?! The kids are often asking for them as soon as they arrive.

But there are ways to create eco-friendly alternatives which still have the wow factor. Here are our ten tips for bags of fun, without the guilt.

  1. The bags themselves

Instead of using single-use plastic, opt for reusable options like recyclable paper bags, fabric tote bags, muslin pouches, or small wooden baskets. Not only are these alternatives more sustainable, but they also serve as a useful gift themselves.

  2. Sweets

Some people love them, some people hate them! But if you are going to include a sugary treat steer clear of the individually wrapped varieties. Instead grab a large mixed bag or head to an organic bulk store. Boxed smarties are also a good option.

  3. Homemade treats

Not everybody has time to create something from scratch, but if you do, cookies, rockyroad, or cupcakes are always lovely additions - and can be wrapped in simple baking paper

  4. Seed Packets

Most kids get a buzz out of growing something! Flower or herb seeds encourage kids to connect with nature and support pollinators like bees 🐝 You can even order them so that they are personalised for your child’s birthday.

  5. Reusable Water Bottles

A kid-favourite! Help reduce single-use plastic waste by including reusable water bottles or stainless steel straws in the party bags. Kids can use them long after the party is over, promoting sustainability every time they hydrate. You can even use the bottles as the party ‘bag’ putting some extra treats inside.

  6. Natural Art Supplies

Instead of plastic crayons or markers, include eco-friendly art supplies like colored pencils made from sustainable wood, non-toxic crayons, or plant-based paints. These alternatives are safer for kids and better for the environment.

  7. Books

A great alternative to a party bag is a book - even better if it’s one about nature, wildlife, our oceans or animals! Look for titles that inspire curiosity and promote environmental stewardship. Often you can pick up a box set collection quite cheaply - this has the added bonus of encouraging the kids to swap once they have finished reading. Colouring or puzzle books are also an alternative option

  8. GenKind stickers & postcards

GenKind have keepsake stickers, postcards, and colouring sheets all printed sustainability, which can be added to simple paper bags

  9. Personalized Thank You Notes

Instead of generic thank you cards, have the birthday child create personalized notes or drawings to thank their friends for attending the party. This adds a personal touch while reducing paper waste. They could also include little affirmations, jokes or facts

  10. A group adoption

If you feel brave enough to bin the party bags altogether a fun alternative is to adopt an animal on behalf of the whole class/friendship group. Each child can be given a little certificate telling them that they are ‘co-owners’ of an endangered animal. No waste, and an extra kind initiative too.

GenKind helps kids use their birthday parties to change the world. By asking guests to donate to a planet-saving cause instead of bringing a physical gift to the party, children learn to value kindness over stuff, whilst reducing plastic waste.
