Discovering the World with Deadly Science

Have you ever wondered how you could make the world a better place through science? Today, we’re going to learn about an amazing organisation called Deadly Science. They’re on a mission to bring science education to Indigenous kids across Australia.

Let’s find out about the challenges they’re tackling, the cool activities they’re involved in, and the awesome successes they’ve had so far!

What Challenges is Deadly Science Tackling?

Deadly Science is working hard to address some really important challenges:

Access to Education: Many Indigenous kids in remote areas don’t have the same access to science education and resources as kids in cities. This makes it harder for them to learn about and explore the wonders of science.

Representation in Science: There aren’t enough Indigenous scientists represented in the field. This can make it difficult for Indigenous kids to see themselves in science careers.

Cultural Connection: Science education often doesn’t include Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. It’s important to connect modern science with traditional knowledge to create a richer understanding of the world.

What Activities and Campaigns is Deadly Science Involved In?

Deadly Science has some fantastic activities and campaigns that are making a big difference. Here are a few highlights:

Sending Books and Resources: Deadly Science sends science books, telescopes, microscopes, and other resources to schools in remote Indigenous communities. This helps kids learn about science in a hands-on way.

Science Workshops: They organize fun and interactive science workshops. These workshops cover exciting topics like space, biology, and chemistry, and they’re designed to inspire a love for science.

Connecting Scientists with Students: Deadly Science connects Indigenous students with scientists through online sessions. This gives students a chance to learn directly from real scientists and ask them questions.

Celebrating Indigenous Scientists: They highlight the achievements of Indigenous scientists, both past and present. This shows kids that they too can have a future in science.

Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge: Deadly Science works to include Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in their educational materials. This helps create a more inclusive and comprehensive science education.

Success Stories: How Deadly Science is Making a Difference

Deadly Science has already made a huge impact with their work. Here are some of their amazing success stories:

📚 Reaching Remote Communities: Deadly Science has sent thousands of books and science resources to over 100 remote schools. This means more kids have the tools they need to explore and learn about science.

🔬 Inspiring Future Scientists: Many students who have participated in Deadly Science programs have gone on to pursue science subjects in school. They’re dreaming big and aiming for careers in science!

💪🏻 Building Confidence: By connecting students with scientists and providing them with resources, Deadly Science is helping kids feel more confident in their abilities to learn and succeed in science.

👯‍♂️ Creating Role Models: Highlighting Indigenous scientists provides kids with role models who show them that they can achieve great things in science too.

🔗 Bridging Cultural Gaps: By incorporating Indigenous knowledge into their programs, Deadly Science is helping to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science, creating a more inclusive understanding of the world.

Deadly Science founder, Corey Tutt (pictured here) worked two jobs to purchase and send resources to schools who were critically under-resourced. In 2018 Corey founded DeadlyScience, a not-for-profit organisation to provide STEM resources and learning experiences to regional and remote schools in Australia and connect young Indigenous people with STEM professionals.

How can we help?

You might be wondering, “How can I help Deadly Science?” Here are a few ways you can get involved:

Spread the word: Tell your friends and family about Deadly Science and the awesome work they’re doing. The more people who know, the better!

Support their campaigns: You can support Deadly Science by participating in their campaigns or even raising funds to help them send more books and resources to schools.

Celebrate Indigenous scientists: Learn about and share stories of Indigenous scientists. This helps raise awareness and inspires others.

Be curious: Always stay curious and keep learning about science. Who knows? You might be the next scientist to make a big discovery!

Respect and learn from different cultures: Appreciate and learn about Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. This helps create a richer and more inclusive world for everyone.

So, young scientists, Deadly Science is doing fantastic work to bring the wonders of science to all kids, no matter where they live. By tackling challenges, engaging in exciting activities, and celebrating successes, they’re making a real difference in the world. And remember, you too can be a part of this incredible journey.
